If it's not one thing, it's another. In the wonderful world of entrepreneurship and small business ownership there is a lot of..paperwork. Even though you are busy doing the day-to-day service for your clients making sure they are financially secure, don't forget about yourself.Don't pay more taxes than you have to. Here's a short list of tax deductions you might be able to take this coming tax filing season:
* Advertising. Did you order business cards? flyers? take out an ad in a local newspaper? all of this is tax deductible.
* Business Insurance. Your E&O insurance is tax deductible.
* Car Expenses. A portion of mileage, gas, insurance, registration repairs and even maintenance.
* Depreciation. Your computers, tablets, other office equipment and furniture all have a 'life expectency. They degrade or depreciate as time gets closer to their end of life. Think decreasing term insurance.
* Home Office. If you have a room that's dedicated for your office, or space in a room that is explicitly used for your work area. You may be able to claim that space.
*Supplies. Any supplies you use like pens, printer ink, paper, etc. Make sure you keep your receipts.
*Travel. If you're one of those agents that don't mind venturing far from home to help families, then this is for you! If you travel and have an overnight stay, most of your expenses are tax deductible.
*Other Expenses. Talk to your tax professional, make sure you include your license renewal, continuing education courses, industry magazine subscriptions. Things you use to help you become a better professional fit into this category.
As always, speak to your tax professional amd make sure you're not paying more taxes than you should. Also, consider incorporating, as there are tax and legal implications that can work in your favor.
